Boat trip around Runde with Aquila
Spectacular boat trip to the bird cliff – a nesting ground for tens of thousands of seabirds

About the tour
The boat trip starts from Runde harbour and heads west around Måganeset. Here, the bird cliffs come into view, featuring Rundebranden and Lundeura. The bird cliffs on Runde are a nesting ground for 100,000–150,000 seabirds, including puffins, northern gannets, black-legged kittiwakes, razorbills, and common guillemots. The popular puffins reside in Lundeura.
On the evening tour, the puffins have finished their day's work—a trip out to the open sea to fetch food—and large numbers of birds gather for an evening swim below Lundeura.
After getting to know the puffins better, the tour continues to Skarveskjæret, where a couple of dozen cormorants live. Then, the trip proceeds to the sheer cliff that once housed a large colony of kittiwakes. The kittiwake nests are built on small ledges in the steep rock face.
In 1946, the first pair of northern gannets established themselves on the bird cliffs. Since then, the population has grown steadily and today numbers about 5,000 pairs. The northern gannet has taken over many of the former nesting sites of the kittiwakes, following a significant reduction in the kittiwake colony.
The coast around Runde is exposed to harsh weather, with a series of underwater reefs. Navigating safely by boat here requires extensive local knowledge.
If the weather permits, the tour goes into one of the large caves beneath the bird cliffs—an experience many truly appreciate.
