The Runde Treasure - Opening of new exhibition July 5th

One July day 50 years ago, 3 divers found what was then the world's largest gold treasure on the seabed just off the coast of Runde. The ship Akerendam, which was originally bound for Batavia (Jakarta), had been hidden and forgotten in the ocean for nearly 250 years after sinking during a storm in 1725.

The story of the Runde treasure is a fantastic tale, but also a human tragedy, as all 200 people on board perished in the shipwreck.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the discovery, a brand-new exhibition has been built, showcasing parts of what was found in the aftermath of the discovery, along with the stories behind it.
