Opplev Runde is part of the Runde Environmental Centre

Tips for visitors

When exploring the Runde mountains, there are certain rules that apply. Here are some recommendations for you.

Trail to the bird cliffs
When heading to the bird cliffs, you typically start from the parking area in Goksøyra. From there, follow the first road to the left after Goksøyr Camping.

Use the designated trail
Up on the moor, there is a designated trail with stone paths and wooden boardwalks, and there are several lovely circular routes. We encourage you to use existing trails and avoid walking on the moor itself. It is important to protect the moor and allow the birds nesting there to remain undisturbed.

Accommodation and conservation
Due to vulnerable areas and nesting birds, camping on the mountains of Runde is discouraged. We urge EVERYONE to use organized accommodation when visiting the island. There are several great options to choose from, whether at Goksøyr Miljøcamping, Christineborg Gjestehus, or with us at Runde Environmental Centre. Out at the Runde Lighthouse, there is also accommodation available, managed by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT).

Puffins and birdlife
During the summer season, many people come to Runde to see the puffins. You can see them best in the evenings from April to July. Around seven o'clock in the evening, the puffins will have finished their daily foraging and begin their evening activity. A spectacular experience awaits visitors! We also recommend taking the time to look around and study some of the other birds we have on the island!

Bird sanctuary areas
There are several different bird sanctuary areas around the island. These areas are marked with signs or fences, and crossing them is prohibited. The moor up by Rundebranden is also a nature reserve, which means you cannot introduce new plants or remove existing ones. You are welcome to pick berries and mushrooms! There are few travel restrictions here, but please tread carefully and be considerate.

Dogs on the bird cliffs
Dogs must be kept on a leash on Runde, and we encourage everyone to keep their dogs leashed to respect the animals and birds that live here year-round. We strongly urge you to ensure that dogs do not disturb nesting birds, as the bird cliffs on Runde are vulnerable.

Boat trips and environmental awareness
During the summer season, boat trips around the island depart from Runde Harbour when the weather permits. It is a fantastic way to see the birdlife from the sea! Remember to show respect for birds and animals, other visitors, and local residents. Please use public toilets and take your trash to the nearest bin. You will find seasonal toilets at the parking lot in Goksøyra, and year-round toilets/showers at the Runde Environmental Centre.

Enjoy your trip!
