Puffin Safari

About the tour
Join us for a magical experience where the mountains meet the open sea. On this evening trip to the bird cliffs, you will get up close to the puffins. Our nature guide will provide insight into the unique lives of the seabirds, local island history, and the story of a genuine gold treasure from the 1725 shipwreck of the Akerendam off the coast of Runde.
The tour begins at the Runde Environmental Centre with a screening of "Silver of the Sea," a fascinating nature documentary about the puffins and the massive herring spawning along the Møre coast. Before your guided tour of the exhibition at the Runde Environmental Centre, you will be served a delicious fish soup with freshly baked bread. With full stomachs and the knowledge from "Silver of the Sea" in your backpack, our experienced nature guide will take you through the exhibition. You will get to know the various birds that inhabit the island, and we will explore what is happening with the birdlife on Runde. Before we head out on our hike, we will take a golden journey back to 1725. A wealthy merchant ship ran aground at Runde, and 300 years later, the wreckage was discovered by three divers.
The hike to the bird cliffs takes about 45 minutes, and the highest point is approximately 200 meters above sea level. After a short, steep climb, the terrain levels out, and the rest of the hike is a gentle ascent. On the way to the bird cliffs, there is plenty to see, and the nature guide will show you the best spots to ensure you get the most out of your trip and have the opportunity to learn much more. Once at the bird cliffs, there will be plenty of time to enjoy the view, the sunset, and the puffins whizzing over your head. You are guaranteed to learn something new about Runde, the birds, and the ocean that surrounds us.
