Common guillemot

This once-numerous bird has become a rare sight on the mountains of Runde. The common guillemot distinguishes itself from the other auks here with its thin beak and brownish-black head. They are in full swing with nesting in April and can be seen on the Runde mountain until August. The common guillemot lays its eggs on cliff ledges, and when the chicks leave the nest, it is not unusual for them to simply take a leap. They can fall from a dizzying 250 meters! Common guillemots are very social birds and live in pairs, but they are not averse to socializing with other guillemots as well.

The common guillemot is a pursuit-diving bird. It has therefore evolved to swim using its wings underwater. It is so skilled at this that it has been observed at depths of 140 meters!
If you are looking to spot a common guillemot, you should bring a good pair of binoculars and head to Kaldekloven to scan in the direction of the gannet colony. If you are lucky, you will catch a glimpse of one! They can also be easy to spot from a boat.
