Great black-backed gull

As one of the largest birds you can spot on Runde, the great black-backed gull is a fairly common sight. These gulls live mostly near saltwater and are sometimes called sea gulls. While they aren't specialized puffin hunters, it has been said in Scotland that puffins swarm to protect themselves from them. On Rundefjellet, you don't often see the great black-backed gull in the puffin colony. Keep your eyes peeled when you cross the Runde Bridge; there's a good chance you'll see one sitting on the railing!

The great black-backed gull eats whatever it can find and often searches for food in the intertidal zone. As an opportunistic hunter, it will eat everything from small birds to fish. In areas where small mammals are present, they may also feed heavily on them.
